Gardai issued a countrywide alert last week warning members that the crazed gunman who shot at officers yesterday was looking for a gun.
A source said: "A warning had been issued on a countrywide basis in recent weeks or so to warn all members that he was looking for a gun. The gunman, who was disarmed by brave gardai after he blasted the gun at them, had fled to a bathroom where the grenade and gun was recovered. Sources have said he has 28 previous convictions for armed robbery, gun crime and drug dealing - he is one of the major suppliers of drugs in the area. He has also handed over more than €100,000 to the Criminal Assets Bureau.
