This Garda sergeant has spoken of the moment he faced down a drink and drug crazed gunman – and says he would do it all again if he had to.
He and three other colleagues were later awarded Scott medal for their bravery in confronting hunter Stephen Dowling – who fired off nine rounds from his high powered rifled in Glenties in February of that year. “I didn't actually believe he was going to shoot at me at that stage. It was such it happened so suddenly and you're there. You don't believe that somebody's going to shoot you. That bullet came within inches.
“You feel fear at the time but then afterwards, when it's over, that's when it really kicks in. This man was a danger to the public and everybody else around him. So our biggest objective was to apprehend this man. “It is part of your job. It is an abnormal job. You could go out there and you don’t know what’s going to happen in the next 10 minutes. You know, your whole life could change in a matter of 10 minutes.”
