Garda middle managers want the size of the force increased by 4,000 officers – to help it police Ireland properly, a leader said last night.
Speaking at the AGSI annual conference in Westport, Co Mayo Mr Clogher said: “The reality is that we have just short of 14,000 guards at present. The population has increased by 650,000 since 2007 - but we had a similar number of guards in 2007. “If the current trends for this year – we saw the commissioner’s report for the policing authority – and if those figures continue this year, we are looking at a 20 per cent increase in resignations.”
He said: “In the latter part of the year we are going to have a raft or retirements – there was fast recruitment 30 years ago, but a lot of those people are leaving early.
