A ninety-year gap was bridged as Galway produced a stunning second half display to dump out All-Ireland champions Dublin.
That result was a watershed for football in the capital as they regrouped to win nine All-Irelands, and this one could mark the end of an era with stalwarts like Stephen Cluxton, James McCarthy and Michael Fitzsimons among those set to consider their future having fallen short in their attempt to win a 10th Celtic cross.
Points from John Maher and Walsh, his second cracker of the day, brought Galway back to within three though unforced errors in possession made it difficult for them to build momentum beyond that. Dublin’s level dropped in the third quarter, so often the period in which they take control of games, as their unforced error count ratcheted up and they only managed two points up to the 21st minute of the half.
Dublin laid siege on Galway but Padraic Joyce’s side were resolute in defence, with no easy shooting opportunities presented, and though a Con O’Callaghan free halved the deficit, the Dubs lacked the composure that was their trademark in these situations for so long as the Connacht champions held on to score a historic victory.
