GAA president John Horan rubbishes reports that players could resume inter-county training in coming weeks

GAA president John Horan has rubbished reports that players could return to inter-county training in the coming weeks. While it was reported over the weekend that the Department of Sport is tentatively looking at a schedule for a resumption of training for intercounty panels, Horan said that no-one in government has made such a suggestion to Croke Park bosses.

"We can't put any of those people or people that they come into contact with in risk just for the sake of playing games. So we won't be making any rushed decision on this. The fact that a lot of club games draw smaller crowds than at intercounty level isn't the main reason why the GAA are looking at the club game resuming first.

If it does come back in 2020, Horan admits he has no problem with the intercounty championships being stretched into the new year."We would be open to that and we'll just the adjust the 2021 season, most definitely. "Well that's the thing, like," he said. "People talk about gathering of crowds and things like this, but the key thing is when will the health authorities declare contact sport is safe and until then we really can't make a decision about returning to play.
