There are many imponderables as to what shape the GAA’s inter-county season will take as the coronavirus continues to make inroads across the island of Ireland.
And while all GAA activity is in lockdown until March 29, it’s scarcely reasonable to expect that normal service across the Association will resume come March 30. Obviously, the financial implications of there being no 2020 Championship would be disastrous for the GAA. So, if the football Championship is to go ahead as planned, the League would have to be completed first and whether time will allow for that remains to be seen.
It would just be a matter of waiting for the current siege to lift and then starting the Championship at the earliest opportunity, with four rounds of football qualifiers rather than two and the Tailteann Cup falling by the wayside. In hurling, with the Leinster and Munster Championships run on a round-robin basis since 2018, they could be restored to a knockout format with the All-Ireland qualifiers reintroduced.
Big impact on everyone but right thing to do
