'The media attention around being the first female referee on a national level surprised me.'

We had a family farm and we played a lot of sports there. That was my first introduction and that’s where my passion for the game really derived from. From there, I would have played in national school before moving onto club level. Growing up in a rural area, there weren’t that many sporting opportunities. In our parish, there was only camogie and athletics for girls, and I did both of those.

It was the perfect stepping stone before I got my first National Football League appointment for round three in the game between Leitrim and London. There was no big transition between refereeing for LGFA and GAA.

As soon as I get appointed to referee any game, I check in with the lads to see if they can umpire for me. I am lucky to have a wee group of friends and family that are consistently available. I have about eight lads, but only four can come out on any given day so that can be a challenge. After that, you need to check the logistics for travel and weather – there was a red weather warning for the Leitrim vs London game in February. Croke Park communicated with all officials to arrive in plenty of time to carry out pitch inspections.
