The funeral of former SDLP leader and Nobel Laureate John Hume, the politician widely regarded as the most influential figure in the Northern Ireland peace process, will take place in his native Derry today.
Thousands would have wished to pay their respects to Mr Hume, but at the request of his widow, Pat, and her family, to adhere to Covid-19 restrictions, only small numbers will attend the ceremonies. From the mid-90s, Mr Hume publicly recognised the mental toll which the pressures of political life had on him.
