Sammie Szmodics faced the Irish media on Tuesday afternoon for the first time - and he used the opportunity to stress his determination to line out for the Boys in Green. He also blasted Hungary manager Marco Rossi and dismissed any notion that he ever wanted to represent the eastern European country.
“I was disappointed because the personal reason was only over that October camp,” he said. “It was something, family comes first, I’m not going to speak about the issue. I had to go home, I had to get back. “Like I've said it before - it was all nonsense really. My grandad was Hungarian, that's where the surname comes from. It is just something that never interested me. Their manager has come out and said what he has said about me. I am not really sure where it came from as I have never spoken to anyone from that country.
“I sorted my passport for Ireland years ago and I’ve been fully focused on getting into the camps and getting into the squads and hopefully and luckily I’ll do it this weekend. I’m fully focused on Ireland and background noise… people can write things on Twitter and say things on Twitter but until you hear it from myself, you know that’s all nonsense.”Having watched last year’s matches, the Blackburn ace has an idea what the Boys in Green are lacking when it comes to picking up wins.
"My favourite position? It would be the 10, the attacking midfield role because I like going forward but I don't mind sticking my foot in as well, doing the defensive side of things as well.”
