France plans to ban the use of 'meat' names like"steak" and"sausage" on plant-based protein food, according to a new decree, in a bid to avoid confusion over the meat alternatives. The market for plant-based meat-like food has surged in the past few years, attracting major investment from global agri-food groups hoping to capitalise on a trend towards healthy eating generally, including less red meat.
The regulation only applies to products made in France, and the country's largest farm lobby FNSEA said it did not go far enough as it left the door open to imports. "This provision is a first step on French territory, a pioneer in the protection of its names, which should be extended at European level," it said in a statement.
Nothing going on in Holland. Top class Journalists in RTE. TV license is super value for money. If it’s not on RTE it’s fake news .
IFAmedia Nothing going on in Holland?
This is short-term thinking because plant-based foods are gaining in popularity. What are the non-confusing alternative names then?
The plant based products use meats hard won goodwill while extolling the supposed difference and benefits of their alternative product. It's dishonest and hypocritical.
Plant foods like this should just try to make protein filled foods that play to the strength of the ingredients instead of trying to make a mimicry of meat
Gud on them
I can't understand it, they either love or hate meat. Not both.
Adding the word 'food' to some of them is debatable.

I'm sure this policy is firmly evidence-based and in no way the product of meat-industry lobbying. The amount of people who are dazed and confused by the idea of a 'veggie burger' or 'vegan sausage' is, I have no doubt, incredibly massive.
The worst country in Western Europe to be vegan takes another step backward. The dishonesty here is incredible, claiming that it is to avoid “confusion” on the part of the consumer. Regulating the words used to conduct business is thought control. Shows they know they’re losing.
In a country where vegetarian meals in a restaurant are as rare as a good wine in Ireland they overreacted there ... 🤣🤣🤣 It's probably easier to legislating on a burger than on women's rights I assume...
Oh the start of trying to get us to eat gmo foods
Has RTÉ covered the farmers protest
Processed crap full of God knows what that is really bad for you. Why the hell would you eat this crap!
BASED
France is cool
About time to outlaw deceptive marketing
Like trying to hold back the tide with a fork.
Long past time this was done. Hopefully it will be EU wide soon.
Should not be required. If meat is undesirable, then there should be reluctance to call plant-based alternates meat.
GHGGuru I hope they don’t ban the word “merde” for these!
Let me fix some wording...'plant-based protein food' - plant-based protein franken food slop
Fake food is disgusting.
kemminnick How was it even a debate 😂
Proper Order! Vegan food is Low IQ fodder....
Great , we should do the same
😂😂😂 I don't know how I missed all the outrage about this one. I never knew people held such strong views on sausage being used out of context. Are we going to have to abandon euphemisms altogether now? This reminds me of the Santa Vax Pass Scandal. 😅
Good. It's misleading, false advertising. And I'm looking at you butter as well. And all other farm, and dairy products that have never been outside a factory. While I'm here, 'made in' is criminal as well.
Good on ya France
Well done France now Ireland please do the same.
Good, go and get your own names and leave us carnivores alone.
Look at the ingredient list on these things 🤮 Something like 100 different chemicals and additives vs the original burger which has just one. Beef 🥩 I know what’s actually healthier and it’s not that muck.
I’m fairly sure people know the difference but hey ho.
That's wonderful; common sense at last. Now ban the use of 'milk' for vegetable juices and nut extract.
Bravo 👏
Cant wait for the nukes
Can I order steak lettuce
A good idea. Basic common sense consumer protection. Though 'hyper-processed-soy-derivatives' isn't as catchy.
I guess this is confusing if you can't read and also love money from dairy and meat lobbyists?
Who gets confused by this?
There is a big farmers political lobby in France...Still an agricultural country...Only EU country that has one....
Good and rename it things like 'Processed Bean - Cancer in 15 Years' and 'Soy - You're going to get man-titties'. Putrid shite.
Sense can prevail still sometimes!
