Former presidential election candidate Peter Casey has blasted new laws making lessons in Traveller culture compulsory in Irish schools as a “a load of nonsense.”
“We have 120,000 people from Poland and 45,000 from Pakistan making their homes in Ireland and we don’t teach Polish or Pakistani history and culture in school.”Senator Colette Kelleher who proposed the legislation says it will encourage more young Travellers to stay in the education system for longer.
But Peter Casey told the Irish Mirror it is wrong Irish schools will be teaching lessons “which will glorify the travelling community.”
