Product development roles feared to be heading to US as carmaker adapts to future with electric vehicles

Ford employs about 34,000 people in Europe, with more than half based in Germany. The EU plans to phase out new petrol and diesel sales by 2035 under plans that some carmakers want delayed.

Ford has been cutting jobs in Europe for years, repositioning its brand to sell fewer types of cars in a bid to become more distinctive in a market that has become saturated with increasingly indistinguishable electric vehicles. ] IG Metall said Ford had cited lower production in Europe due to supply chain issues, price cuts by rival Tesla as well as the energy crisis as reasons for the most recent round of job cuts.Climate change is one of the themes of this year’s World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Markets Correspondent, Joe Brennan, reports from Davos where a recent winter heatwave means the highest town in Europe has significantly less snowfall than usual.
