Food delivery drivers in Dublin are set to refuse to work for several hours this Valentine's Day . Drivers will protest at the Spire on O'Connell Street from 5 o'clock on Wednesday evening, switching off their delivery apps until 10pm. Riders in other areas, including Cork and Galway, are also expected to join the action that will last for five hours.
Fiachra Ó Luain, Labour rights’ officer for the English Language Students’ Union of Ireland, says their basic pay has dropped by 50% in recent years. "We've gone from €4.29 for a basic payment for delivery before 2021, to €2.90 after 2021, and now down to €2.15, and as low as €1 euro per delivery. "People have been asked to risk life and limb, and go across the city - the algorithms are incentivising risk"
