Flanagan: 'A life sentence should mean life for monsters like Peter Whelan'

What is it with this State that makes sick children wait years for hospital treatment but swings into overdrive when it comes to helping murderers and rapists?

The disclosure on RTE’s Prime Time last night a psychopath like Whelan has been temporarily released to meet his family is shocking. In 2002, Whelan broke into a house in Cork where two young women were alone and proceeded to butcher Nicola Sweeney, 20, in a frenzied knife attack.He received 15 years for that and a life sentence for Nicola’s murder, which began in 2013, but it would appear the authorities feel he has done enough time.

There are dozens of other families around the country who live in fear the killers who took the lives of their loved ones will be released from prison having served nothing like a life sentence. Indeed, my son and I staked out a local church where he had been due to go but I understand the prison authorities called it off after inquiries were made about the impending visit.
