Three units of firefighters from Killarney and Kenmare in Co Kerry are battling a gorse fire inside Killarney National Park which has already scorched more than 150 acres of ground.
The fire comes two days after Kerry County Council issued an appeal to landowners and members of the public not to set illegal gorse fires. The practice of burning land to drive grass growth is widespread in many parts of the country each spring. It has been condemned by wildlife and conservation groups.
Killarney Fire Brigade was alerted at around 7pm on Sunday night to a fire in the Muckross area of Killarney National Park. Two units of the fire service from Killarney attended the fire, which was already burning over several acres. A third unit was called from Kenmare for back-up.The fire's progress was stalled by the shoreline of Muckross Lake.
On Friday, Kerry County Council appealed to landowners not to place additional strain on emergency services at a time when those services are already involved in supporting the national response to the Covid-19 outbreak.
1 in 4 robberies are 'detected' (some form of solid action or sanction – such as a court summons, conviction, fine, caution and so on – results from the investigation of a crime) Probably 0 in 1000 fires are 'detected'
Anyone doing this should have their land taken from them immediately.
Absolutely devestating for Ireland natural landscape and wild life. There must be some way of identifying the culprits. The is Beyond maddening!
How sad...disappointing...and in such a lovely beautiful landscape.
That’s terrible and it’s sad that people,no matter what their age would do such a dangerous thing as set fires....
Bring a law that states, burned land cannot be used for rest of the year...
