Ireland Headlines News

FIFA has confirmed that alcoholic beverages will not be sold at World Cup stadium sites in Qatar, in a reversal of a previous stance.

Fans will no longer be able to buy Budweiser, which would have been the only alcoholic beverage available to fans due to its sponsorship of FIFA.

FIFA released a statement confirming the removal of sales points of beer from the stadium perimeters"following discussions between the host country authorities and FIFA". Supporters will still be able to consume alcohol in designated fan zones, but the incident throws into question the degree to which FIFA has control over the tournament. The brewing company is reported to pay FIFA $75m every four years to be one of its top-level partners, and it will be interesting to see what impact this has on the commercial deal.

The Football Supporters' Association criticised the lateness of the decision and accused organisers of a"total lack of communication".

Fair enough; no big deal not drinking beer for a couple of hours while watching a match; but no mention of people in corporate boxes. Seemingly, it’s ok for them to watch match & drink beer. Isn’t that also hypocrisy?

Same as in stadiums for internationals all over Europe - including the Aviva.

Absolute bollix. I'd feel sorry for the fans but they decided to support this dumpster fire so it's on them.

The west needs to realise that Muslim people have their own rules and their own democratic systems .The west needs to respect their beliefs . We have no right to impose our. Reliefs on 70% of the world

Yet in Qatar Airways lounges the alcopops flow

These alt-left narratives present a voyeuristic coloniser perspective. They sneer at countries whose values are , in effect, more civilised than ours.

Boycott Qatar

The second worst thing to happen in a world Cup after voovoozhalers

It is a Muslim country with Sharia law after all....

Will make no difference. Wouldn't imagine the poor slave baxtards from India they have dressed up as 'fans' are big into the sauce.

Fifa not being honest? No way!

Worst, World Cup, ever

Budweiser doesn't count as beer.

The important thing is Qatar got their world cup, and Dassaut got to sell 36 Rafale fighter jets. That's really what all this stupidity boiled down to.

Have they confirmed whether being gay is also banned - on pain of death?

Shame on the irish living there. My daughter noreen is a teacher and she never abandoned us for oil money

Only in Corporate/corrupt box's!

that 'previous stance' probably instrumental in tens of thousands of people's decision to spend an absolute fortune on a holiday. Jesus wept!! (or Mohamad or whoever)

Lol no refunds kuffar

The brown envelope World Cup. FIFA should be ashamed of themselves for this disgrace. QatarWorldCup2022

Not a bad thing. True fans will enjoy the game without it, and down the line will appreciate it. But no one likes to be forced and 2 days before is ridiculous

The aul' goatbangers sure know how to party 🍻 MuzlimParty

It was destiny that we didn't qualify

Fabulous, this is going to be a PR disaster!!🤣🤣

Only in Ireland would this make the news 🙄 Who gives a shite!

What a calamity. How have fans voluntarily chosen to attend this farce?!

Great to c. Drink isn't everything

If we had qualified this ban would have been ineffective against Irish fans fully accustomed to ditch and handbag drinking.

Glad to hear it. International studies have revealed roughly 50% of murder victims and 50% of murderers have alcohol in their systems. Alcohol is at the root of innumerable social ills.

Thank God Ireland didn’t qualify !

Sure Qatar is a grand auld spot.

Muslims are good craic aren’t they

No sympathy for anyone going to a country where sexual contact between unmarried people (gay or heterosexual) is illegal. Women who report a rape will be subject to the same law. How did they get the FIFA World Cup? (sarcastic question)

Fifa officials holding out for another bung - must have got it.

Beer?

Still have Budweiser, it's not beer anyway

This was the plan all along…

Good luck to all going to that, what fun😂😂😂

Muslin country, their rules, and anyone STUPID enough to go there it's good enough for them. Nothing and I mean NOTHING would inspire me to go to any Muslin country, their culture and values are not mine, end of

Any chance Harry Kane can wear an armband in support of all the affected fans?

Consternation in the alcohol companies sponsoring it.

Sounds like great craic.

Good. Go enjoy the match.

Corporate areas have all the alcohol you want, you just have to be wealthy and connected, no alcohol is just for the great unwashed, usual hypocrisy but that's always the way.

I knew there was a reason we didn't qualify. Kenny is playing 4D chess

The English yobs will run riot regardless they never fail to bring shame on their once great nation.

Good it's not needed you'll enjoy the match more

Gearing up to be a complete PR disaster.

No harm. Great to see some countries still having some balls on keeping with their traditions.

Welcome to the shitest World Cup ever.

Depends who you know whether you'll get beer at the stadium. Sepp says it'll be fine for men of our ilk. QatarWorldCup2022 Qatar2022

Will make soccer even more boring

If Ireland had qualified John Delaney would fly in a plane load of Dutch Gold and all would be forgiven (again)

Not just a Muslim country but one with Sharia law....

Just an all around shite craic attack.

Only to FIFA-Officials!

No Beer in the desert? .....The Harp ad from many years ago foresaw this event , AHH Sally O Brien those were the days.

Their country, their rules. It's a Muslim country. We've know about this for the last 10 yrs. Hardly a surprise tbf😂

That's the sound of hundreds of Irishmen, Aussies, Germans and Poles canceling their flights and tickets.

You would need a drink being in that country 🤣qatar

Oh dear dry days.

Ffs DUP at it again 🙄🤣
