The inquiry heard that Dr Chughtai was suspected of having repeatedly made contact with a young female intern who had worked with him in MUH in 2016, which had continued long after they had left the hospital

A hospital doctor has been accused of harassing a junior colleague he met at Mayo University Hospital by repeatedly making romantic overtures over a number of years and even proposing to marry her in what the woman described as a “terrifying” and “chilling” series of calls and texts.

Dr Chughtai, a native of Pakistan who lives in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, has denied five charges of professional misconduct relating to inappropriate contact with the female doctor, who was identified only as Witness A. The woman, who is in her early 30s, said his “completely irrational” behaviour had forced her to deactivate her regular phone number and all social media because of his persistent in trying to find out her location over five years.

The inquiry heard the first allegation regarding inappropriate and unwanted attempts to approach his colleague occurred at MUH between June and July 2016. She claimed it was “extremely chilling” when he also asked her the following day if she had a sister. He was also asked to delete Witness A’s number from his phone and to have no further contact with her.
