An estimated 500,000 workers in the UK are on strike, marking the biggest day of strike action there in decades, while dozens of rallies organised by the TUC are also set to take place across the country.

Ireland's largest public service trade union, Fórsa, has expressed its solidarity with trade unions in the UK as the Trades Union Congress marks a national 'right to strike’ day.

An estimated 500,000 workers are on strike, marking the biggest day of strike action in the UK in decades, while dozens of rallies organised by the TUC are also set to take place across the country. The TUC has said that the UK Government’s new anti-strike plans are unworkable and almost certainly in breach of international law.

In a message to TUC leader Paul Nowak, Fórsa General Secretary and ICTU President Kevin Callinan said the union’s national executive fully supports the stand being taken against the UK Government's plans.Today's day of action comes after the UK Government set out a plan to enforce minimum service levels during strike action, including for ambulance staff, firefighters and railway workers.

Under the bill, some employees would be required to work during a strike and could be sacked if they refuse.
