People were 'genuinely shocked' by news of the record-breaking temperatures from Met Eireann yesterday, according to Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather

A weather expert has explained why last month was the warmest May on record despite the country experiencing “pretty awful” conditions.

He said people had been “genuinely shocked” by the claim that Ireland had just experienced its hottest May on record, with average temperatures exceeding 13 degrees for only the second time in 125 years. “It doesn’t mean that we had loads of warm days – it just means that the average temperature was warmer than average,” the weather expert added.

It beat the record for the previous warmest May in 2008, when there was an average monthly temperature of 13.03°C. The coldest May remains May 1923, when there was an average temperature of 8.67°C.
