Prospect of captains receiving yellow cards sees nations back down over armband stance

England captain Harry Kane had been due to wear the One Love armband against Iran on Monday afternoon, while Wales skipper Gareth Bale was due to wear it in the match against the United States later in the evening.

The band contains the rainbow colours associated with the Pride flag and had been set to be a strong statement in Qatar, a country which criminalises same-sex relationships. The statement continued: “We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play.

“We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. “Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways.”

since when are football matches meant to be used as a polical tool? I agree with the fight for lgbt rights and all but it's rediculous to ask players to fight for causes on the pitch

Hopefully scrapped for good.

Apparently their high moral stance has a lot of limitations .

Focus should now be on Iranian women and girls. as Omid Djalili says the English team should adopt the scrunch and snip gesture if and when they score. QatarWorldCup2022

The world cup is one day old and already a shambles

A STAND means nothing if there is no consequence. to do a U turn at the first hint of consequences means you didn't really mean it in the first place. american footballer was banned when he first took a knee. IT meant something because there was a consequence they never meant it
