"We have the option of banning a planned export. That's the message to AstraZeneca: you fulfil your contract with Europe first before you start delivering to other countries," Ms Von der Leyen told Germany's Funke media group.
The company has blamed production delays at its EU plants, but European officials are furious that AstraZeneca has been able to deliver its UK contract while falling short on the continent. EU-based manufacturers have shipped 41 million vaccine doses to 33 countries since early February, Ms Von der Leyen said, making the bloc one of the world's biggest export regions for Covid-19 vaccines.
Most of the EU's worry is over Britain, where the inoculation campaign has progressed at a much faster pace. The mechanism has so far only been applied once, with Italy blocking the export of a 250,000 dose shipment of AstraZeneca vaccine to Australia, citing "persistent shortage" and "delays in supply".
why the warning. just do it
The UK has invested billions in Oxford Uni over 600 years, signed early at $3.00 a dose and paid to set up their own manufacturing sites in the UK with preferential supply contracts. The EUseless signed late, paid $2.15 and want most of the UK output. Deluded doesn't cover it.
Ursula, don't talk about it - just do it!
EU_Commission vonderleyen you and the EU have failed Ireland.!! 🇮🇪☘
Lol!
Isn’t this down to contracts with private companies? Blocking Exports to other countries is a slippery slope. The future of the EU and companies that will move out of it, rests on this poor decision
Most of the AZ vaccines are made in the UK and India....EU should do a Trump and grab the Pfizer and AZ vaccines....Introduce export controls like the US have...
'Hey, we need more of that vaccine that we keep telling everyone isn't very good.' 😂😂
She's turning into a megalomaniac and it's a good job she was born in Belgium even though she does have German ancestry, because the the jokes would have been flying then.
