'Ethnic diversity matters' in Irish classrooms - report by emma_okelly

Teacher Emer O'Neill has not been able as yet to watch the video that shows George Floyd’s last moments alive.

No formal record is kept of teacher ethnicity here but there appears to be no more than a handful of people of colour working as teachers in Irish schools. So why is it so important to have ethnic diversity in teaching? The phrase "if you can’t see it you can’t be it" encapsulates one reason. She tells a story about a white student who asked her why he is not allowed to say the ‘n’ word when the black people he sees on TV or listens to in songs can.

And she has practical advice too: "Don’t drop down to pass Irish", she says. "Because if you drop down you can’t become a primary school teacher. In school, my teacher told me to drop down but my Mom she knew the points system, she went in and said ‘she is not dropping’, and I got a B2".For those from minority backgrounds of all kinds the barriers to becoming a teacher include a financial one. "That’s a huge investment of time, and money", he says.

emma_okelly In primary schools there should be a floating Gaeilge teacher coming into classes at allotted times when needed. This would allow for already qualified teachers from outside Ireland work straight away. Needs more diversity and full separation from Church for all public services.

emma_okelly Irish schools have no representations and there is no provisions if students have been discriminated or called names. Kids have no responsibility and say and do whatever they want. I experienxed it.

emma_okelly As a youth worker, working in a diverse community, the young people I work with would love to have one black teacher teach rhem throughout their education. Role models are so important

emma_okelly Diversity is a lie rammed down our throats by governments who want cheap labour. You’re being conned. ‘Diversity’ is forced on white countries but never black or Asian counties. ‘Diversity’ results in conflict, increased crime, division and fractured communities. Wake the F up!!

emma_okelly What about Nigerian, Kenyan, Ugandan, Tanzanian classrooms? They have zero diversity. What’s being done about that? Oh that’s right, the diversity nightmare is only for traditionally white European countries. Other countries classrooms and culture are untouchable 🙄🤦‍♀️

emma_okelly I've a big problem with Irish schools, lack of ethnic diversity and lack of openly LGBT Teachers. The only way this can change is separation of church and education. Local priests have no place on school board of managements.

emma_okelly Don't hav kids...so ignorantly assumd Éire wz proceeding by the natural ordr of things: DiverseDemographic of population⬆️,DiverseDemo' within ALL professions⬆️ I mean WTH hav ye bn doing since I left school?🤷‍♀️ astiunion Best *Educators* I had rockd every boat they set foot n

emma_okelly Not everybody wants diversity, some people value or country, without flooding it with foreigners. RTEFakeNews

eamonnmitchell emma_okelly Oh the patriots have showed up. Bless. Irish language requirments presents a considerable obstacle to people looking to teach here I'd say. Also -as some mention gender -guys seem less keen to go into teaching for various reasons. Very high points for relatively low pay career?

emma_okelly Does gender diversity matter? Because the profession is approaching 90% female. Does RTE care about that?

emma_okelly Why are rte doing this? Black bin people are not excluded from teacher training - the cao system is impartial and colour blind. Please stop peddling this racism is everywhere none-sense

emma_okelly Are you saying our teachers are not good enough and need to be replaced ?

emma_okelly If only you knew how bad things really are.

emma_okelly 🤣😂😅😆

emma_okelly There's plenty of videos of blacks beating up white people. Can she bring herself to watch those? Would she care about the white people being beaten up? Or is it only a black criminal who is alleged to have held a gun to the belly of pregnant woman she could get upset about?

emma_okelly Divisive shite. Someone from Cork should only be taught by someone from Cork. Females should be taught by females. Males should be taught by males. Special needs students should be taught by special needs teachers. Muslims, Religious of every type should be taught by their own.🤡

emma_okelly RTÉ not exactly a beacon of ethnic diversity

emma_okelly I was in secondary school in the 80s. Every one was white and spoke English. I do not feel disadvantaged. My sister teaches 30 seven-year-olds of whom about 8 have no English and the class is held back. How is that good?

emma_okelly It’s relentless. Give it a rest ffs

emma_okelly The tenor of this article is important. Diversity matters. But there shouldn’t be an implication that applicants are turned away because of their ethnicity. We currently have an acute crises in teacher recruitment. Some positions cannot be filled

emma_okelly RTÉ should come with a health warning.

emma_okelly We might as well be under communist rule as to listen to rte one-sided reporting/ commentary of late, we seriously pay a licence fee for this rubbish?!

emma_okelly Rte scum of the nation 🤺➕🇮🇪

emma_okelly Let the world in and then call the natives racist. I'm fed up with the imperialist ideology of open borders and mass immigration.

emma_okelly Because we can only learn from someone who has the same skin colour as ourselves. 'Quick, someone cancel David Attenborough for his lack of melanin'. This is utter race baiting dross.

emma_okelly No it doesn’t.

emma_okelly Why is the Irish media determined to sow racial division where none exists? What's the plan here, exactly?

emma_okelly Seachadta i nGaeilge? Ní bhíonn, gan amhras.

emma_okelly Insane policing in the US has nothing to do with Irish classrooms.

emma_okelly Diversity in teaching is of crucial importance and the recent refunding of HEAccess PATH projects that support teacher diversity is an important step in the right direction. Please retweet this important article.MU_MAP EqualityMU mu_aced MU_Education froebelMU MTPteacher

emma_okelly This lack of diversity in teaching needs research. There's diversity in other sectors esp healthcare, nursing, medicine. It's either difficulty of access for existing teachers with qualifications from outside Ireland or the profession is a less attractive option.

emma_okelly RoryMcDaid

emma_okelly Def. a lack of diversity amongst teachers in this country. It would be fantastic if this were to change. A teacher is such a role model in a young child's life. Children can learn all day about diversity but to see it in action in their schools & classrooms is far more powerful.

emma_okelly Tell her to watch this 👇

emma_okelly Dont we have a recruitment shortage? I dont think we're turning teachers away, regardless of background.

emma_okelly I wonder what ever happen to 'Judge by their character not the colour of their skin . if anything there should be more male teachers in schools .

emma_okelly When I see people of different race interviewed, perhaps black or wearing a turbin or a veil, and they answer in a broad IRISH accent.. that's a positive little symbol of how we've more in common than what divides us. BLM

emma_okelly State broadcaster race baiting
