Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was unable to visit his dying mother in her final weeks because he obeyed coronavirus restrictions. It emerged as Britain was gripped by a row over allegations that the top aide to Boris Johnson broke Covid-19 rules.

The news about Mr Rutte emerged as Britain was gripped by a political row over allegations that the top aide to Prime Minister Boris Johnson broke Covid-19 rules to travel cross-country to stay on his parents' estate.

"The prime minister has complied with all directives", Mr Rutte's spokesperson told AFP when asked about reports that the premier had stuck to the rules and so not seen his mother before she died. Mr Rutte earlier announced his mother's death, saying that "in addition to the great sadness and all fond memories, my family and I also have a feeling of gratitude that we were allowed to have her with us for so long."

Leo was able to visit the park topless. Dutch could learn a lot from us.

Omg mad

Still waiting for your detailed report on LeoVaradkar picnicking and not social distancing with his pals on Sunday? It's making the news worldwide but not here? It's almost like Reporting in North Korea or China! Has to be Government approved

That is his choice and a respect it but personally if it was my mother I would have gone to see her.

rte you forgot to mention LeoVaradkar as well

Why are you bothered? Do you guys want to rejoin the Union?

A 99.9% recovery rate. A between 0.01-0.03% mortality rate. And people are keeping themselves away from dying relatives, friends. Not attending funerals of deceased relatives or friends. Do you not see the utter madness of it all?

pointing the finger at boris johnson? lol, this is Ireland and you've yet to point out its leaders transgressions. or is he a protected entity. knew the hypocrisy would emerge. lol

Varadkar lockdown

Perhaps an Irish news source would be better checking on their own Prime Minister ignoring COVID social distancing rules rather than believing dodgy allegations from British anti-Conservative tabloids which turn out to be only partly true but mostly false.

SkyNews piersmorgan GMB

But Leo PicnicInThePark broke his own lockdown

I bet he’s fuming. I’d be after Ferguson for everything if that happened to me;and rightly so. Ferguson was having sex with a married woman whilst forcing Bo Jo to put the UK into ‘lockdown’- a prison term btw....

Hey lads, I thought you Irish and Europeans were all “Britain is irrelevant”? And yet you’re all obsessed by us. Cummings is a c*nt. But why are you & Europe’s front pages bothered by a British advisor breaking a lockdown in an irrelevant country!? 🤪🤷‍♀️

And also while Leo Varadkar was found breaking his own lockdown to have a picnic. Nothing like a good bit of Brit-bashing to help with the chip on the shoulder, hey lads!

abridgen

sianberry Wish DominicCummnings had this backbone!

Breaking news:Cummings complied with the rules and did not see his dying favourite uncle. WTF.

azeem If my mom was dying. I'd go see her.

So? Different countries have different laws. Or are you too thick to realise that?

No longer allegations. He broke the law.

The comments under this are insane and not one of the accounts has an actual picture of the of the person tweeting. If you’re going to be outraged, make sure it’s on account of the truth - Leo didn’t break a lockdown.

BrigidLaffan

we have leo a disgrace around the world and the press in the uk hypocrites like a swarm of wasps roaring about social distancing and meanwhile irish media look bigger hypocrites hourly with their articles

Something that happened in one foreign country happening differently in another foreign country. Who gives a f ?

TheAeronut robertcourts

Ah yes, but the Dutch have an excuse - they have leaders who lead by example. We simply have a miserable excuse of a PM...

agentathcliath Also Ireland.

This. This is what leadership looks like.

RIP yer Ma!!!

Fascinating, how is this relevant to ireland?

And you give a free pass to this scmuck. 🤦‍♂️

And LeoVaradkar was spotted breaking restrictions. NotMyTaoiseach CaretakerTaoiseach

I guess this is what a real leader looks like. Stands by his principles and doesn’t just pontificate to the minions he rules

RTE this is what is happening to all Media outlets

Law MUST be equal for every single person. No excuses!!! We all could came up with an excuse if that is allowed.

Any mention on Leo in the park?

And Leo went on the sesh with the lads too.

BorisJohnson DominicCumins BBCBreaking simple approach - take the jump sirs and save face as this time, whilst people continue to die - this is not going away

What about the controversy re. Varadkar breaking the lockdown rules by moving to a second residence & by being in a public park with a group of people having a drinking session / picnic?

Why don't RTE just admit it. You don't like the guy.

Why did you completely ignore LeoVaradkar apparently breaking his own social distancing rules? 🤔

HarrisHolihan Perhaps there are too many like Rutte (Sam McConkey, Luke O’Neill and Tony Holohan come to mind) who appear to lack social and emotional intelligence and demonstrate rigidity regardless of context. Sadly these are the kinds of powerful men making decisions that impact all of us.

Did Boris's top aid get his belly rubbed in public by his lover? Completely against rules on no picnics? TonightVMTV

campbellclaret Leadership means different things to different people, but it cannot be rules for some and not for others.

Netherlands, Ireland, UK. These are separate nations.

Stop the Fee Sell RTE

Did he enjoy picnics with his shirtless pals ? No - that was Leo

Anything to say about Varadkar breaking the lockdown rules and drinking outdoors at the weekend in the phoenix park, as your obsessed with the UK politics ops forgot your Varadkars propaganda station

Don't forget Leo

RTE is having trouble holding the narrative. They were never told they would be having resistance from the paymasters :) its going to get more and more worse RTE till friday!

RTE is supposed to be an Irish Public Service broadcaster. Not a tabloid online newspaper

Dutch view family as expendable. I believe there is a story of them euthanizing a depressed 19 year old girl. Sure is strange to the outside world.

Tories are a lot like our Republicans. Rules are for thee, but not for me.
