If someone was to tell me a few years back that a Mayo-Dublin Championship game wouldn’t stand out in a crowd of other fixtures, I wouldn’t have believed it.
It’s difficult to say Mayo have closed the gap on the All-Ireland champions since judging by their performances in the Championship to date. They have been pretty much in cruise control in the five games they have played but still looked really impressive in most of them. In saying that, Louth and Roscommon were right in it with about 50 minutes on the clock until Dublin unleashed the bench and romped home.
If Mayo get a sniff of a green flag tomorrow they have to go for it; safety first isn’t enough to beat this Dublin team. From a Mayo point of view, they need to make sure it’s not a damaging defeat ahead of a home preliminary quarter-final the following week. The much-anticipated proposed rule changes were released this week by the Football Review Committee.
It’s interesting they have changed the wording on the tackle; it won’t completely clear it up but it would certainly be an improvement. The scoring zone is too NBA-like. Players, in time, will be turning shots down inside the arc to get shots off from the ‘two-point zone’. Think of a referee at club level trying to establish if a player’s foot is on or inside the line on some of these shots, leading to a lot of consternation.
