Dominic Cummings to make public statement over coronavirus lockdown trip

Dominic Cummings will make an unprecedented public statement today over his 260-mile drive in the midst of the coronavirus lockdown.

It adds: "They must observe discretion and express comment with moderation, avoiding personal attacks, and would not normally speak in public for their Minister or the Department." But he faces a mutiny from his own scientific advisors, bishops, and at least 20 Tory MPs who called for Mr Cummings to go.

"I have had to tell people they can’t go to funerals, say goodbye to the ones they love, see the family newborns that they will grow to love, visit the graves of parents, siblings or worse, children, and visit friends who are dying." The PM last night claimed Dominic Cummings' 260-mile drive from London to Durham in late March followed "every father's instinct".

On March 23 Mr Johnson said: "That’s all - these are the only reasons you should leave your home. You should not be meeting family members who do not live in your home." And by No10's own admission, Mr Cummings - who stayed in a property near his sister and nieces - did not yet have symptoms when his family drove to Durham.

Professor Stephen Reicher said the row had undermined the pledge that "we're all in this together" - and that will affect people's willingness to follow lockdown.
