Doctors say they’re being failed by the health system in a new study which captures their frustration and helplessness in their own words.
One psychiatric doctor revealed: “When I was in , I never knew when I would finish work. I never knew if I would get lunch. I never knew if I could go to the toilet.” A radiology doctor echoed this noting: “Anyone who threatens to break rank and disrupt this hierarchy is quickly ostracised.” Another doctor working in emergency medicine said there was “never enough time to get anything done because of the sheer volume of patients and lack of staff”.
The study said the shortfall in the level of care the hospital doctors wanted to deliver – and were expected to provide – was a source of significant stress and distress.Another clinician working in emergency medicine said it was impossible “not to absorb all the misery of unmet need and not bring it home”. A radiology doctor reflected that her colleague suffered from burnout adding: “I have felt very close to that recently.
The researchers pointed out that junior hospital doctors are early career doctors on short-term, precarious employment contracts of three to 12 months in duration.
