Secondary legislation in NI required to implement opt-out donation system cannot be approved at Stormont due to continuing political stalemate

Daithi, his father Mairtin and mother Seph met the Northern Ireland Secretary at Hillsborough Castle, Co Down, on Wednesday.Afterwards, Mr MacGabhann said Mr Heaton-Harris had told the family it would take too long for the government to intervene and pass the laws at Westminster.

He said time was not on the family’s side as he stressed the seriousness of Daithi’s heart condition. “But our point was that there is no Assembly and, without the Assembly, this secondary legislation can’t go through.“We told the Secretary of State that this is much bigger than Daithi’s Law, this is a beacon of hope for the organ donation and transplantation community here.”

While he said he would ask officials to assess how the law could be implemented by the Government, he also urged Northern Ireland MPs to consider tabling a Private Members’ Bill to proceed the issue by that legislative route. “That is why I want fully functioning devolved institutions to resume as soon as possible, so MLAs can get back to work and swiftly implement the law that Daithi and his family have campaigned so tirelessly for.

No offer for Irish Children*. Could we call you far-right now for stating that the school is full? That's very hard on young minds who may well perceive it as rejection. We need to be better than this.

NI Secretary vows to explore 'Daithi's Law' optionsThe Northern Ireland Secretary has told Stormont leaders he has asked officials to explore possible avenues to implement organ donation laws in the absence of the power-sharing institutions. There is literally NO use for your organs for yourself when you're dead, apart from some form of demented necro-vanity. NONE whatsoever. Inexcusably selfish and utterly pointless to not permit a life to be saved.
