The Department of Agriculture in Ireland has stopped quarantining the pets of Ukrainian refugees due to the high volume of animals entering the country. This decision has raised concerns about a breach of EU laws intended to protect against infectious diseases.

The Department of Agriculture stopped quarantining the pets of Ukrainian refugees because it couldn’t deal with the volume of animals entering the country, according to internal correspondence seen by the Irish Mirror.

However, the Department of Agriculture could only source quarantine accommodation for 55 animals, and 1,806 had arrived with Ukrainian refugees within the first eight months of the conflict. “I suspect D/Ag have chosen this way forward due to constraints in their quarantine system – but this is only supposition on my part,” he wrote.

The Department of Agriculture also covered the cost of microchipping, vaccinating, transporting and quarantining the animals, which amounted to more than €808,000.
