Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has fined WhatsApp €5.5 million for privacy breaches, in a decision that follows another dispute with other European regulators over how big tech platforms justify collecting users’ information.
The Irish commission said the size of the penalty imposed on WhatsApp, which is far smaller than the €390 million fines it handed to fellow Meta companies Facebook and Instagram last week, was comparatively low because the messaging app was previously fined €225 million in 2021 for similar breaches.
