The last Munster final to be played at Cusack Park was back in 1919, when Kerry beat Clare by 6-11 to 2-0.

The Clare-Kerry provincial decider will take place at Cusack Park following a coin toss by the Munster Council, with the game set to throw in at 1.45pm on Sunday, May 5.

The counties met in last year’s final, which was played at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in front of just 12,499, roughly one-quarter of the ground’s capacity, as Kerry ran out 14-point winners. However, there should be a much greater sense of occasion at Cusack Park, which catered for a capacity 20,055 crowd as the Clare hurlers took on Limerick last Sunday.

While Clare haven’t beaten Kerry in the Championship since their shock win in the 1992 Munster final, which was their last provincial success, they have tended to be far more competitive against them when taking them on in Ennis in recent years. Clare are now managed by Tralee native Mark Fitzgerald, who is in his first year in the job having succeeded the long-serving Colm Collins.

They beat Waterford comfortably in their semi-final last Saturday while Kerry had a three-point win over Cork as they bid for a 13th Munster title in 14 seasons.Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.
