A record 3,394 cases of Covid-19 were reported in the Republic on Saturday along with four additional deaths

He told RTÉ’s Radio 1 on Saturday there could be “anywhere between 3,000 and 6,000” cases at the peak of the current surge and that Saturday’s figures would include some of the 9,000 delayed cases that were flagged by Nphet this week.

“That is an astronomical figure. It is beyond our worst fears, it is beyond our worst nightmares, it is absolutely huge,” she said. He said cases being reported now would be comparable to a reproduction number of 1.8 to 2, but that a formal estimate would not be available until next week. “We saw an even more intense level of socialisation and viral transmission over Christmas than we might have expected and that’s what’s leading us to the really precarious position that we’re in now,” he said.

Nine more cases of the strain of Covid-19 first discovered in Britain have been detected in the Republic., the director of the UCD National Virus Reference Laboratory, said on Friday night, testing of samples dating from December 23rd to 29th had found nine further cases of the more infectious variant.

His comments come amid ongoing concern over the rapid rise in the level of coronavirus infections across the State and fears over the knock-on impact on the health service.

Big number of cases - but if the ROI didn’t test, then it wouldn’t be reporting ANY cases...

Are they the true figures or is there still a lag? Who knew that opening the pubs would cause such mayhem.... but let's blame the US and the UK to save face! Apparently millions of them are flying in 24/7.... it's time Irish people face the true facts that this is home grown!

Assuming the people who died were 80+, sounds like Covid isn't very dangerous. But yet we're in lockdown.

Irish Slimes not worth the papers your printed on!! Do some real reporting for once.!! IrishSlimes
