Court ruling in case of woman in vegetative state

The President of the High Court ordered that doctors should be permitted to take all steps necessary to allow the young woman, referred to as "Katie", to pass away.

She was made a ward of court last year after the woman’s family informed the Health Service Executive that they wanted her to be allowed to die rather than undergo planned surgery. She said that taking the view of a loving and considered parent, apprised of all the facts, it was in her best interests that her life support be withdrawn and she be allowed to "pass away" naturally.

The judge also said it was relevant that the young woman had always been very private about her body. And her current care and treatment was at odds with her wishes in that regard.
