Ireland’s difficulty in accepting refugees, and controversy over the Rooskey asylum centre, remind me of when I first personally encountered people forced to flee their own country.
In the case of the Vietnamese, they were fleeing a combination of economic sanctions, the legacy of destruction left by the war, Vietnamese government policies, and conflicts with neighbouring countries. There was an air of adventure on the plane which, although departing from Switzerland, was due to fly the boat people back to London as they were rescued by a British ship.
I later heard that a couple of the Vietnamese families that flew back on the plane with me moved from Britain to settle on the east coast of Ireland.More than 35 years later, Ireland was to make an even greater contribution to caring for refugees when North Africans and Syrians fleeing war and starvation were rescued from the Mediterranean.
