Closing arguments will be made later today by lawyers in the sentencing hearing of Molly Martens Corbett and her father Tom Martens, who have pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Limerick man Jason Corbett.

Judge David Hall called the case an"excruciating tragedy" and said he would allow the defence to speak last. After the closing statements by the legal teams, the Corbett family are expected to present victim impact statements to the court, before Judge Hall passes sentence on the defendants.

In both jobs, Martens held Q clearance, a top-level security clearance permitting him to view top secret government documents, something he had to be tested for frequently. This, he said, explained why Martens could not remember how many times he hit Mr Corbett with a baseball bat, nor did he remember seeing his daughter hit Mr Corbett with a paving brick.

The most notable one, which Judge Hall said he was"wrestling with," was in the Department of Energy interview, in which Martens described hearing a row upstairs, saying he knew Mr Corbett was abusive towards his daughter, feared he may have been using violence against her, knew he had been drinking, and decided to go upstairs with a baseball bat to put a stop to the abuse.

Michael Earnest, a former NCIS and Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction agent, which is a Washington-based agency to investigate the spending of nearly $150 billion of federal funds in Afghanistan, is Martens' brother-in-law and has known him for 53 years.Todd Sandstedt, a former FBI agent who worked for Martens for a decade, said Martens was a gentleman, adding"his picture should be beside the dictionary definition of gentleman".

Dr Scott Hampton, a psychiatrist employed as a domestic violence counsellor in New Hampshire, and a director of an organisation called Ending the Violence, which works with perpetrators and victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, was called to give expert opinion on behalf of Martens Corbett. He said the power imbalance between Mr Corbett and Martens Corbett was apparent from the circumstances of their meeting, it was not through a dating site, but arose because she answered a job advertisement, therefore, their relationship began as employer and employee.

Dr Hampton told the court it was absolutely in Martens Corbett’s interest to stay married and to keep Mr Corbett alive in order to realise her wish to legally adopt and get custody of the children.
