In a new report, the World Meteorological Organisation says climate change is accelerating, with carbon dioxide levels increasing, sea levels rising and ice sheets melting faster than ever before

The warning from the World Meteorological Organisation forms part of a "united in science" review for a UN climate action summit at which countries are being urged to increase their ambition to tackle emissions.

And with levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases rising more quickly than before, to new highs in the atmosphere, further warming is already locked in, the WMO warned. Sea levels have been rising by an average of 5mm a year in the past five years, compared to 3.2mm a year on average since 1993, with much of the rise coming from glaciers and ice sheets that are melting ever more quickly.

"As we have seen this year with tragic effect in the Bahamas and Mozambique, sea level rise and intense tropical storms led to humanitarian and economic catastrophes." Under the international Paris Agreement, countries committed to curbing temperature rises to "well below" 2C and pursuing efforts to limit increases to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels to avoid the worst impacts.Mr Taalas warned: "To stop a global temperature increase of more than 2C above pre-industrial levels, the level of ambition needs to be tripled, and to limit the increase to 1.5C, it needs to be multiplied by five.

So the ice is melting faster now then after the last two Ice ages? Really?

SCC_Ireland It would be a pretty safe bet that anyone who pooh-poohs the notion of climate change doesn't live anywhere near an area of the globe that's directly affected, & their eyes are shut to spin-off consequences. This will change. Soon climate change will come home to them.

Just propaganda to tax people more.ClimateChange is fraud

More hyped RTÉ/ FG propaganda.... massive carbon taxes coming in the budget lads .... plus expect a massive increase in wind turbine planning permission applications, coming to Donegal

Climate psychosis accelerating in recent years.

Climate change has and always will be a cyclical thing.

This are figures from the NOAA in the US....

“Sea levels have been rising by an average of 5mm a year in the past five years, compared to 3.2mm a year on average since 1993, with much of the rise coming from glaciers and ice sheets that are melting ever more quickly.” = climate change is accelerating! Not slowing down.

All the climate deniers feeling threatened by the fact that the world is moving to be more sustainable. So funny how small minded some people can be.

Tis shockin altogether.😄

There was some extra melting this summer in Greenland but all frozen again now...Lots of snow also this September in Greenland....

Sea levels have been rising by an average of 5mm a year in the past five years, compared to 3.2mm a year on average since 1993....No evidence of that....Think some of this is being made up...

This same report was issued 5k, 10k, 20k, 1 million, 100 million and 500 million years ago. Shocking fact RTE Ireland was under 200 feet ice 50K years ago. Climate change since beginning of time to end of time!

And in real news two Irish scientists prove there is no correlation between an increase in carbon emissions and temperature. Findings have been peer reviewed btw and scientists now censored accordingly

Has anyone warned Obama ? Perhaps he doesn't realise...

Atypical.RTE carries report about end of world because of carbon emissions in meantime flies a truck load of advert executives to Japan RWC.

when is greta thunberg and all the other climate change activists going to take a trip to china , india and some of these africa nations which countries which have horrendous environmental problems
