Siobhán Cullen told how the cast were “over the moon” to return for a second season of The Dry — and what she thinks it is about the Sheridan family that audiences are connecting with. The eight-part series — written by Nancy Harris and directed by Paddy Breathnach — picks up with the Sheridan family seven months after the end of season one.The family members are relatively content and in a new state of normality — at least, to all outward appearances.
"Certainly for Caroline, I think this is probably a moment where she kind of needs her family. And even though she’s loathed to ask for help, she needs it and she’s not really getting it.” “I suppose deep down, that’s not really her — so she’s struggling with that a little bit. She has a semi-boyfriend, a new boyfriend, that she’s giving a go. But that’s not really going to plan.”
Pom Boyd, who plays Bernie Sheridan, added, “Actors are very good at gelling with each other. We do it very quickly — we bond very quickly — because we’re kind of used to that, but I think humans kind of do that though. If you like people, you bond very quickly.“Ciarán is such a gent. Him and me, being the mam and dad — I only met him for the first time on season one. We felt so at ease, he’s got lovely energy and we settled into the Tom and Bernie thing very quickly.
“And I think that’s truly how families exist — they can be the cruelest and also the most loving in the same sentence to each other, because you are family and they know you best; they would have, usually, you would hope, your best interests at heart. "They may be acting out, or partying a little bit too much, out of a bigger situation than what it presents to be."
He said, “Paddy, the director — he’s got a heck of a job to do, never mind the logistics of balancing it all out. It’s about balancing the tone between the serious issues — you’ve got to make them real, but there’s got to be an element of humour in there all the time. If you play it too funny, people will say it’s playing for laughs.“Tom’s journey this season — he doesn’t mean any harm, he’s kind of an innocent. He's rather naive. He’s not a bad man, but he gets himself into situations.
“She doesn’t do psychology, she doesn’t do analysis — she’s pretty blind to her kids’ emotional needs and her own emotional needs. She’s in pain. She’s lost her son. There’s that tragedy."She’s kind of charismatic, I suppose. We see this season that she joins AA, as we know from the end of season one. In season two, we see how it’s going for her — she’s really popular and she’s got all these new friends in AA and so she’s having a great time. She loves how her life is.
