Tony Holohan said he does not view garden centres and hardware stores as ‘essential’

Garden centres and hardware stores are permitted to open this weekend but the chief medical officer has said he does not view them as “essential” retailers and urged the public not to make non-essential journeys.on Tuesday, gives gardaí power of enforcement in relation to the restrictions on movement introduced by the Government two weeks ago.

These include “hardware products necessary for home and business maintenance, sanitation and farm equipment, or supplies and tools essential for gardening, farming or agriculture purposes”.said the regulations were drafted “to ensure that a person accessing essential supplies can do so without committing an offence”.

“We have identified the range of both essential and non-essential work,” he said. “If people are involved in travelling to places that are non-essential that will be something the regulations provide for.

Might be selling some useful basic masks ..

Why are they open then

It is the start of growing season. Since when is growing your own food not essential? I need seeds and fetilizer as well as some new tools.

Then they should have closed it in the first place. How difficult is to Say Open only Supermarkets and Pharmacy. What is the need to open any other store. The list of essential stores includes so many stores except the items you need only in Emergency. Ridiculous

DIY shops and garden centres are going to be packed, there’s nothing else to do and nowhere else to go, you can’t go to Mass but at least now you can buy a bag of nails and make your own crucifix...

One could argue that a hardware store is more essential than getting a slab of beer in an off-licence attached to a garage. Say a Ball cock goes in your attic - an easy fix if you can get the part - or flush the toilet using a bucket?’!

Why not close them... Except for collection of pre ordered and prepaid on line and a collection time allocated..

Woodies are closed but delivering online!

Tis is all load of bull shit no viruses thair just down to money greed

Good - except in the UK they are open car parks full as the Brits buy essential patio sets and cushions and a sparkly cushion to sit on and perhaps some Brillo pads .

Medical officers are significant - Trump thinks he knows better - and one would will love to tell him to just shut up and listen

I agree about garden centres but hardware stores are essential of sorts. You'll know how essential they are when something at home breaks down.

Heading towards 25% unemployment, debt rising, proverty will cause mental and physical health issues, life expectancy will drop, there is no evidence shutdowns reduce deaths. Absolutely none The shutdown is a Domino theory/effect, leadership is afraid to buck the shutdown trend.

The same man who messed up smear tests? I'll take his advice

Great ! Need more paint.

And he happens to be just chief medical officer he’s not a minister or duly elected rep so why is he making this statement to the press! Seems outside his remit!

There are hardware stores open Where Sorry .. do they deliver?

As far as I was aware most are only operating with a delivery service. I have not seen any with open doors where I am and there are quite the few around me.

Great, thanks Irish Times for exposing another dumb officer.

Our local hardware/builders’ merchant is working behind closed doors, taking orders and preparing orders for collection or delivery. Win/win.

Yes. Would put an end to cowboy builders still working😡😡😡😡😡

But HOW then are we meant to grow the salads on our windowsills that Eamonn Ryan is calling for? 😭😭😭

So order them to stay closed then!!!! Why leave it up to their profit driven greedy owners whether or not to stay open....

So close them 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Think we should all follow his advice , he has got a lot more right then wrong 🙏

gimme the paint

i just want some paint tony

👍🍀
