Extreme weather in West Africa’s cocoa-producing countries and poor harvests has left experts saying it will be more difficult to get cheap chocolate

Channel 4's The Great British Bake Off is said to be in crisis as a major segment could be axed over a serious chocolate shortage.

Bake Off bosses are now said to be unsure whether they should include the show's usual chocolate week in the next series. The crisis has led to bean costs per ton hitting a record high of £7,800 which is up 350 per cent from September 2022.A source told The Sun : "Producers are fairly confident they’ll be able to get their hands on enough cocoa and choccy products for the series. It’s more about tone and continuity.

Saharan dust is said to have blocked sunlight which is needed to grow pods in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroon. This is where three quarters of the world's cocoa is produced. Crops have also been impacted by a disease called black pod rot. This comes as it was reported that Bake Off is set to continue to air on Channel 4 in a three-year deal. Reports earlier this month suggested Netflix and other streaming channels could be set to make bids to move Bake Off to a different broadcaster.
