Australia's highest court has acquitted former Vatican treasurer George Pell of sexually assaulting two teenage choirboys in the 1990s, allowing the 78-year-old cardinal to walk free from jail.
The former Vatican treasurer had steadfastly maintained his innocence throughout a high-profile and lengthy court process. "I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel; there is certainly hurt and bitterness enough," the cleric said in a statement issued before his release from prison.
The second choirboy, who is not known to have ever spoken of the abuse, died of a drug overdose in 2014.Cardinal Pell's lawyers had argued there were "compounding improbabilities" in the case, including that Cardinal Pell would not have had the time or opportunity to molest the boys in the priests' sacristy after mass.
I believe them.
What a shocker he got away with it ..... so he is free to molest more people now .... the law needs to change and lock the paedophiles up
Well my Aussie relatives have said that, “The other cases can go ahead now seeing this one was dismissed. He was in charge of Ballarat which was a hotbed of convicted pedaphile priests.' Justice may yet be done.
It's good that a group of grownups took hold of this case before it became an even greater injustice.
The Church is a joke.
Rte pushing the anti Catholicism agenda again, get your own shop in order let Christ Jesus look after his own!
Justice is blind.
A sad day for justice.
