Campaigners have expressed dismay over a recent decision by Meath County Council to allow one of country’s biggest meat processing companies discharge commercial waste water into the River Boyne |

Concern has been raised that water quality for more than 70,000 homes and businesses could be at risk if the proposed pipeline gets the go-ahead."We had 500 pristine rivers in this country and in 30 years that has been brought down to six," explained Peter Whelan, who is chair of the Save the Boyne campaign group.

A Facebook page set up to highlight the issue called 'Save the Boyne’ currently has more than 9,000 followers."This is about getting a balance. It’s about balancing our economic development with our agricultural needs, with our food production but also with our water quality and our public health," she said.

"We feel very strongly about this. We’re going to go all the way with this. We’re in this for the long haul and if we have to go to Europe we will," he added. However, it said it believes its plan"will deliver safer water treatment to best practice environmental standards".

The irony of under the greens the environment has never been less safe...unbelievable..trees cut down all over the country..fields hedges decimated..rivers polluted like never before

we really have a deplorable nd shameful record on leaving the environment as we found it for future generations in this country. rivers.polluted..hedgegrow stripping..healthy trees knocked for no reasons it's a fucking disgrace

Back handers and corruption what has the EU to say about this as its not legal 🤔

You can achieve anything with corruption, it’s all about the money. There’s no council in this country free from corruption.

What the actual....

🤔should be meticously monitored. rivers are life.its like bloodstream🩸

Shit like this needs to stop. I can get fined for polluting a river, and rightly so, yet a company actually has a county’s blessing to do it? Honestly, the short sightedness in this fucking country gets on my tits 🙄

What the hell is wrong with these people?

So they want to be like the states broken and illrepairable.

For God's sake!

Here’s our government and the Greens at their best. God forbid that they actually do something worth while when it comes to tackling the environment. Utter disgrace. Instead they’ll tax everyone during a cost of living crisis. Not fit to govern.
