Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, Professor Christine Loscher said that if schools closed at the end of this week it would allow for a longer 'circuit breaker' ahead of Christmas when inter-generational mixing will occur.
Prof Loscher said that schools have the highest number of unvaccinated people mixing when there is concern about a new highly transmissible variant of the virus and this does not make sense to her. She said the Omicron variant makes up an estimated 10% or 11% of cases now and that could be at 50% or 60% of cases next week.A Department of Education spokesperson told RTÉ News that it is not considering closing schools any earlier than planned."The scheduling of the school holiday periods during the academic years is agreed between the managerial authorities of schools, the teacher unions and the department for the purposes of standardising breaks at Christmas, Easter and mid-term.
Same nonsense last year.....
Jesiphone nephet has some serious problems. Control is their problem do as I say not as I do. They don't like the idea of being told what to do by others they are right all the time according to themselves. Government are hanging on to every word they say.
Mine aren’t going in next week.
How about close RTE on Friday instead, to limit the spread of fear and ensure everyone has a nice Christmas?
Nan and grandad arrive today form England and we have kept our 10 year old at home since last Friday and know lots of people that have done the same . Merry Christmas everyone and stay safe
At least NPHET have keeping schools open as one of their three priorities so it looks like this won't happen. If people are worried about their children transmitting Covid they can A) keep them at home and/or B) use regular antigen tests
kidsFinishFriday parents - don’t send them in next week!!
A sensible proposal for early closure of schools but politicians and policy advisers would be frightened to do this. The wrath of some parents would be immense.
They won’t. It’ll be the night clubs and dining and pubs fault.
Hahaha
One professor is getting an awful lot of airtime on rte platforms?
Yes great, on Monday all the little darlings will be packed into shopping centres up and down the country, largely unsupervised. At least in school there is a structure.
Doesn’t she know the kids will just hang out in shopping centres for the week?
She's full of it...!!
If you want to keep your kids off, keep them off. If you’re happy to send them in, send them in… schools should be open until the end of term.
Why close the schools, just ask people travelling into Dublin from North America to show proof of vaccination. Currently this not the case, verified by twitter and FB pages for Irish abroad. Lockdown here we go
Hospital numbers: Down ICU numbers: Down Ireland is on course to have many fewer cases in December than NPHET's optimistic prediction. What's the fuss?
If you want to take your child out of school for a few days, do. You don’t have to wait for your lord and saviour Tony to say it’s ok.
Yea the muppets closed schools for a storm that most people didn’t think they should have excepted for a few counties. And now should close Friday but can’t . Total fools in power
Close them early, they do feck all the last few days anyway!
Pubs before kids
Special schools and classes: 6 kids per class and they need routine as long as possible. They can’t remote learn. This is not an option for these children
Im calling it now ..next january ..The next new varient will only be able to target children ..cue , line them up for the injections .....we are literaly sleepwalking our children into the next IRISH NATIONAL SCANDAL ...
The media have a lot to answer for with the constant fear mongering.
FFS.
Agree with closure or move online, but still nothing is being done to make schools safer in January. If drop in cases over break then schools open under false pretences and soon another surge in mid Jan. Need to use hols to install filters, reinstate testing & mask policy.
We can expect an announcement from Norma on Friday 24th December that schools are to close from Friday 17th December to ensure children’s safety for the xmas.
coming out of a 17 day lockdown due to young baby having covid. 6 cases in my senior infants class. not sending him back. if he gets it hes not allowed out until after new years. close them now. not fair on kids
FergalBowers Once again TodaywithClaire is trying to dictate the national agenda, pure cheek and scaremongering, none of these people are elected to govern and should butt out!
