One Irish tourist in Sydney said he went to the airport today, but desks were shut and flights were cancelled. He said people were crying in the airport as they look to get home.

Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins has called on the Government to put a repatriation plan in place for Irish people stuck overseas during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Limerick politician called on the Government to "partner up" with Aer Lingus or another airline to put in place a number of repatriation flights for Irish citizens. He said that he had raised the issue with Tánaiste Simon Coveney and also with his own party leader Mícheál Martin.

There is no virus in the middle of Aus,go there for 6 months then come home 👍

You’re not the only one theneonboot

I understand their worries but being stuck somewhere is not the end of world and many are in a worse situation.

Public money should not be used on people who travelled for pleasure reasons (as distinct from essential) when it was known about the impact of the virus & the imminent restrictions re same. This money would be better spent on PPE equipment for our hard-pressed medical personnel

No sympathy. I got the last flight from LA on Friday. Irish tourists, like me, were told multiple times by the airline & the Irish gov't that we must return home by March 21 or risk being stuck abroad. Irish consulates across the globe were also available to help you get home.

We were stuck in Egypt a week ago and Irish Embassy told us to get a public bus to Cairo and see where we get from there 😂 while travel agent TravelRepublic abandoned us for 8 days without any contact. Had to manage to get home ourselves.

Can we ask when did he go out there because if it wasn't before this all kicked off he should be left there

What’s the problem ? Flights are still available, just checked Skyscanner: Depart Wed 25th Sydney-Dublin, via Hong Kong & London.

'just one more week Dermot, it'll be grand'

What's wrong with staying put and riding this out in Australia..its not like being stuck in a third world country.

Last week was the week to be coming home. This was a staggered closedown of the country. People were warned.

KStantonComedy could have been us!

Not trying to be rude but these people were enjoying the life out there until the very last minute and not taking it serious and now are crying to come home! Ireland shut up shop 10 days ago and now they are looking for government help to get home!

Last week

No sympathy for him,was he out in the outback with no access to internet for the last month or what?

Perhaps people should have paid attention to the writing in the wall and come home weeks ago?
