The Cabinet will consider a plan to move the country to Level 5 restrictions until the end of November at its meeting this afternoon, RTÉ News understands

A Cabinet meeting to sign-off on tightened restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19 is under way at Government Buildings.

Many non-essential retail outlets and hairdressers will have to close, while a reduction in off-licence opening hours is also under consideration. Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said it has taken the Government a number of days to decide what new restrictions to introduce because any changes are complicated and have a huge amount of implications.

It brings to 1,852 the total number of Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland, with a total of 49,962 confirmed cases. The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in hospitals has risen to 298 in the last 24 hours. There has been an increase in the numbers of patients with the virus in intensive care units to 34, up from 31.

Ms McDonald also said it is extremely unhelpful and dangerous that Northern Ireland has a different strategy on public health advice and called for an all-island approach to managing the virus.

Stuff the lock down, why are you messing about with my mums tele bingo again

Deja vu Ireland ....

Moronic.

nice one government, really helping my ongoing mental health issues

Who needs an economy anyhow

Level 5 you say? Sounds all a bit too Scientology

Very clickbaity title. This is the nphet recommendation that we all know just rephrased

Once again, our weak Government bows to NPHET, a so called advisory body, full of egotistical, power hungry individuals, with no concept of reality. Solidarity between public/politicians, evident during first lockdown, has now vanished.

Wait until it gets to Level 42

Hopefully this lockdown can get rid of the worrying increase in numbers of the common cold and people getting paper cuts... an absolute joke

And now it’s “end of November”, this is also even when WHO recommend against it despite Ireland supposedly listening to the WHO...I think we can confirm it’s not WHO they are actually listening to.

This is BS. I’ve followed guidelines while GAA clubs up and down the country broke them

What a pity some couldn't stick to the rules. Let's vent our frustration at those people as well. Unfortunately it wasn't rocket science to see what was going to happen. Reckless people lost us many jobs.

Based on a test that doesn't work, incorrect death figures and the idea that ICU's and hospitals are at near capacity when in actual fact they are no busier than this time last year. But hey, I guess I'm a conspiracy theorist right 🙅🐏

Let's take to the streets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've got to be fecking kidding?

The nation holds its breath....

nphet civil servants on huge salaries and pensions won't have to worry about their jobs or income

We did without a Government for months this year so Level 5 should include all TD's bar the senior cabinet members furloughed as well. If non-essential work is being cancelled so can local political business.

Cabinet to make Level 5 decision, the restrictions expected and lockdown latestHere's all you need to know this Monday morning about what's to come today This is insanity. NPHET are largely the same people who have run our health system for years. They have a track record in failure & mismanagement yet we blindly trust them over lockdown. Lockdowns don’t work & will go down in history as one of the greatest mistakes of all time

Here are the differences between Level 4 and Level 5 Covid restrictionsNo restrictions will work until we CloseTheSchools and more importantly closetheborders. Very confusing for most people! 'Must' and 'should' are both modal verbs. MUST is used when expressing obligation or an unavoidable requirement, whereas SHOULD is more of a recommendation, or simply a desirable goal. lockdown
