Boris Johnson is being kept in hospital for observation after the official description of his coronavirus symptoms shifted from "mild" to "persistent".
But his spokesman refused to confirm or deny reports he has received oxygen treatment after being taken to the London hospital for tests at 8pm last night.No10 did, however, say Russian reports that Mr Johnson was on a ventilator are "disinformation". And aides left open the possibility that Mr Johnson will still leave hospital before the end of today.
Asked if this meant having to wear gloves or disinfect paperwork he signs and sends back across the River Thames, his spokesman said: "We follow the advice of the medics in terms of making sure there is no risk”. He has used his phone to speak to No10 officials this morning, though it was unclear whether this was in voice calls or just text messages or emails.
Asked if the PM has pneumonia, the spokesman said: “We’ve set out that the issue is that the Prime Minister has persistent symptoms of coronavirus. As I’ve also just said, he had a comfortable right, he’s in good spirits. If there is any update at all, we will provide you with that information.”
