A peninsula in the westernmost part of France, Brittany is renowned for its beautiful coastal towns, rich cultural heritage and mouthwatering food. It’s also the home of everyone’s favourite comic-book Gaul, Asterix.
Brittany is also home to a number of incredible aquariums, including the sprawling Océanopolis, in Brest, where you can follow the Otter Trail, with both sea and river otters. That’s worth the trip on its own. Elsewhere, the Grand Aquarium in Saint-Malo boasts over 10,000 fish and a stunning 360-degree aquarium.
Further inland, the cities of Rennes, Brest and Nantes are bustling urban centres that are a must for anyone who loves a good city break. With stunning architecture and sparkling nightlife, you won’t want to leave.Walk the ancient walls of Saint-Malo’s old town, with stunning sea views on all sides. The walls themselves were constructed between 1155 and the 1700s, and are steeped with history.
If you prefer your history a little more outdoorsy and hands-on, the Breton peninsula is peppered with ancient dolmens and standing stones, including the Carnac alignments, which is a collection of 3000 standing stones dating from 3000-5000 BCE. Quite what they’re for, nobody knows for sure, but you can learn more about them at the Musée de Carnac.
