Malcolm Noonan was responding to a Private Members' Bill to extend the franchise, which has been tabled by the Independent TD Thomas Pringle.
Mr Pringle said that the introduction of the Leaving Cert Politics and Society subject along with easy access to information, means that young people are well informed and have the necessary tools to make good decisions.Mr Pringle's Vote 16 bill would require a constitutional amendment to enable lowering of the voting age.
If one can work and pay taxes, then they should be able to have a democratic say in the state of affairs, simple as that.
The age should be increased if anything.

When I was 15/16 in school, we'd a subject called CSPE. It was part of the J.C. There was political discussions, including that of the workings of the UN. We went on a school trip to the Leinster House and we sat in the gallery to watch the proceedings, kids this age should vote.
