Met Eireann says snow could fall in some areas this weekend. It comes as fears are growing that a major cold snap could be triggered by a 'Sudden Stratospheric Warming', which caused the 'Beast from the East' in 2018.

Weather models indicate that there is a chance of a Sudden Stratospheric Warming happening later this month.

Snow fell in parts of Ireland on Thursday and Met Eireann has forecast more freezing weather over the coming days. Looking ahead to next week - February 12 to February 18 - it will continue “colder than average” with a chance of further “wintry precipitation”. The national forecaster said: “High pressure centred to the north of Ireland is expected to bring drier than average conditions during this week. This area of high pressure is likely to drift away to the east later in the week allowing the possibility of some frontal systems to encroach from the west. It’s going to be colder than average.
