The false articles being sent around of social media have generally featured a well-known personality or celebrity, combined with a controversial headline to grab attention

Bank of Ireland has issued a warning after a number of false articles have circulated online using the name of the bank in a bid to defraud the public through cryptocurrency schemes.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin became one of the most recent public figures to fall victim to a false advertisement online which alleges a major Irish bank has sued him. Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud at Bank of Ireland said: “Fraudulent advertisements are increasingly appearing online and on social media channels and are designed to steal consumers’ money through fake financial products, investments or cryptocurrency schemes.
