The Government approved legislation brought forward by the Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to Cabinet on Tuesday to raise the age of sale of tobacco products from 18 to 21.

The ban on selling tobacco products to under 21s will not come into effect from 2028 to ensure today’s 18-year-olds can continue to smoke.

A Government spokesman said that while it is intended that the law will be passed “as quickly as possible”, its formal commencement date will be February 1, 2028.
