Writer/director James Cameron had previously said that the first sequel would need to be successful in order for the rest of the sequels to be officially greenlit, and considering The Way Of Water is officially the third biggest box office hit of all time... yeah, we're thinking it was a success.
For the three remaining sequels, Avatar 3 has been pushed one year, from 20 Dec 2024 to 19 Dec 2025, but the others have been pushed back several years, with the fourth movie delayed from 18 Dec 2026 to 21 Dec 2029 and the fifth movie from 22 Dec 2028 to 19 Dec 2031.Saldana's co-star Sam Worthington will be 55 when the fifth movie arrives, while Sigourney Weaver will be 82 years old, and James Cameron will be 76.
